Frequently Asked Questions
  • How much for a brake job?
A "brake job" is not that easy. There are several componets that make up a vehicles brakes (pads, rotors, calipers, caliper pistons, brake hoses, brake fluid, porportioner valve, brake lines, and if equipped ABS, brake hardware and master cyclinder). Anyone of these items could be faulty. This is why we offer a FREE brake inspection, because over the phone we have no idea what kind of shape any of the above items are in. We ask you to bring in your car not to pigeon hole you, but so we can do our part as professionals and do a proper inspection of all brake parts.

  • My "Check Engine" light is on.....
The "Check Engine" light on a car is its way of telling you as the owner something is wrong and it needs some attention. There is no one thing that sets the "Check Engine" light sets off, i.e. transmission fluid low, or needs an oil change, or it is the converter. Hundred's of parts and pieces make up your vehicle and any one of them could turn on your "Check Engine" light. This is why it is so important to have you vehicle diagnosed as quickly as possible. Some things to keep in mind.. 1.) Hard Code - Light goes on and stays on. This means you need to get inspected/diagnosed very soon. 2.) Light Flashes - VERY BAD! This means the car is fixing to shut off, because your engine is has some major problems and the more you drive it the more damage is going to be done. Plus, your car is programmed to shut down. If this happens then you need to have your car scanned/diagnosed ASAP! 3.) Soft Code - Light comes on, sets the code in computers memory, and then goes off. This could be something simple but still needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

  • Why do my rotors need to be "turned" or "machined"?
When you apply your brakes, the caliper squeezes your pads to the rotor, and if the rotor has anykind of warpage in it then either you will feel your steering wheel or brake pedal vibrate, or the warpage is so minor that it prematurely wears out your pads. Your pads are made to be applied to completely falt surface and ifthere is anykind of warpage then you could hear squeeks because the pads are not applying evenly. When we inspect a vehicle we pull the rotors off and check the back of them, because on the back there is a stamp that informs us the minimum and maximum thickness of the rotor. We then measure your rotor and compare it to the the min and max. After doing this this lets us know if we can turn or machine the rotors. Basically, you need to turn your rotors, if possible, every time you get your pads replaced. This way your pads wear properly.

  • I need my converter changed....
Catalytic converters come in many different shapes and sizes depending on your vehicle. If you go to an establishment and they scan your car and it pulls up a po420 or po421, then this means your converter is in need of changing. However, this does not tell us which one it is. On some cars there is only 1 converter and on some there is up to 4. some are directly fitted onto the motor which means we would have to specially order it. This is why we recommend bringing it to us so we can not only scan it but figure out which one it is. Otherwise we are just shooting in the dark. Some converters can be changed and an "universal" used to help save money. Bottom line is we need to see your car to figure out which one you need before we even start to quote it.
